Remember the excitement you felt as a young child, those few
nights before Santa, the Tooth Fairy or that elusive Easter Bunny was scheduled
to pay your home a visit? Well, there are a good number of parallels between awaiting those
present barring holiday-mascots and the electric energy I’m feeling just three
sleeps out from the 2011/12 Canadian Skeleton Selection Race.

there have been a few times when I have found myself struggling to keep up: keep
up with my ‘to do list”, keep up with my training schedule; keep up with
remembering to eat, and keeping up with Phrixus (we are still discovering each
other’s style and rhythm).
It’s okay though, because even with an overwhelming XL order
of stress with a side of pressure I’m actually really happy race #1 is quickly
approaching.

Race day means I can let it all go. Two race runs at less
than a minute each. Less than 60 seconds that are ALL MINE. From the strength
and power of the push start to the grace and beauty of the fast-line down the
track – both times I cross that finish line Thursday morning I’ll know I did
everything in my power to succeed – because that’s the only way to compete – by
leaving it all behind & doing exactly what I have trained to do. Win.

It really is quite remarkable to look around the start house at all the
men and women of the Canadian Skeleton world. All from different backgrounds,
all with their very own story and all
with that same goal in mind: to win. Sure, it can make for tension so thick you
could cut it with a knife – but that’s a feeling you either die or thrive on.
Individual sport has never claimed to be for the easy-going athlete. No, the
best athletes in this field will find their edge, and use it to carve out a
place on top.
